Perhaps you are beginning to feel sick and want to quickly and easily spike your immune system into overdrive. Maybe you have an important month ahead of you and simply cannot afford to fall ill. Either way, making sure that your immune system is operating at 100% is crucial to both prevent disease and feel healthy on a daily basis.

Not only does an efficient immune system ensure that you are not sick in the first place, but it also shortens the duration of existing illnesses. A poorly functioning immune system will practically guarantee that you are sick on a regular basis, and the illnesses you experience will often be more severe and far longer lasting. Luckily you can ensure that your immune system doesn’t falter by taking a number of simple and effective precautions.

Fortify your Immune System Through Getting Proper Rest

The first and easiest way to ensure that you have a strong immune system is by getting proper rest. When you are receiving less than six hours of sleep a day, your immune system will take a significant nosedive.

The sleep you do receive, however, must be of good quality. Tossing and turning all night or waking up every hour robs you of crucial REM sleep. REM sleep is what leaves you feeling properly rested. Stress or drug use can both also lead to sleep loss or poor quality sleep.

Fortify Your Immune System With a Proper Diet

The second, and equally as important, method of strengthening your immune system is by eating a balanced and nutritious diet. This doesn’t just mean loading up on 1,000% of your RDA for Vitamin C as many people seem to think. Rather, it means getting all of your necessary nutrients and not bogging down your body with hard to process chemicals and “trash calories” such as Trans-fats.

Essential Fatty Acids, do a number of valuable things to boost the immune system and ensure that your body’s systems are in proper working order. Vitamin C, which has a strong effect on the immune system, is very important, but chances are that unless you are already getting plenty of Vitamin C. Antioxidants are yet another important dietary component for a strong immune system. Various fruit, vegetables and nuts/seeds are high in antioxidants.

Avoid Stress to Fortify Your Immune System

Avoid stress. Besides leading to lower quality sleep, stress has also been proven to have a distinctly negative effect on your immune system. Often times, stress, illness, and poor quality sleep can cause a cycle of poor health for an individual. Cut it off at the source and attempt to maintain a positive outlook.

Finally, live a healthy lifestyle. This means both proper diet and vigorous exercise. If your body is in good shape, it will fight disease and maintain homeostasis far better than if you are in poor physical health. Exercise at least once a week, and try to avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Ultimately, even a small amount of regular exercise will go a tremendous way in maintaining your health on a daily basis. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth at least a pound of cure.
