Best Healthy Foods to Eat: Whole Grains, Low Fat Yoghurt

Let’s say you are trying to eat healthy but you don’t know where to start. Obviously, you have a limited number of meals and probably just as many options.

You go grocery shopping and everything seems to say “organic” or “light”, but you still can’t discern what the healthiest foods are. This is because food companies have reacted swiftly to the majority of Americans’ wishes to eat healthy through misleading labels.

Ultimately, if you want to begin a healthy and nutritious diet, there are a few simple foods that you can eat that are unbeatable as far as caloric and nutritional content. Even better, they are foods that you are likely already very familiar with.

Whole grains are among the best healthy foods

The first type of food to eat is one that practically every American eats on a daily basis; breads and grains. Believe it or not, a slab of white bread with butter on it is perhaps the most unhealthy thing you could possibly eat during breakfast While butter is certainly full of saturated fat and cholesterol, it may actually be slightly better for you than consuming large amounts of white bread.

This is because unlike whole grains, white bread contains no complex carbohydrates or protein. This causes the bread to spike your blood sugar (which triggers your body to store fat) and then it leaves you hungry again just half an hour later.

Instead of white bread, eat whole grains. Not only are they high in fiber (which keeps you feeling fuller for longer), but they are also a good source of protein and vitamins AND may actually lower your cholesterol. Replace white bread with whole grain bread, white rice with brown rice and so on.

Low Fat Yogurt is One of the Best Healthy Foods to Eat

The next healthy food to eat is low fat yogurt. Many people tend to overeat during snack time. This can be because of poor impulse control, or simply because they overestimate how hungry they are. When you are craving a snack, eat some low fat yogurt.

It is high in calcium, protein, and doesn’t pack too many calories. This goes for any healthy snack too, whether it is a handful of peanuts or some carrot sticks. Replacing a meal with a snack (while not neglecting your calorie count, of course) can go a long way towards losing weight and living healthy.

While you can certainly make a meal out of whole grains and snacks, most people simply crave protein in their diet. When choosing a protein, be sure to look at fish such as salmon and tuna. Both are low in fat, high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids, and packed absolutely full of protein.

Even better, there are plenty of types of fish, and many types of fish are absolutely delicious. If you get tired of preparing them one way, there are usually dozens of other methods available. Make sure to be careful, as some fish high in the food chain may contain harmful levels of mercury. As such, limit your fish intake to no more than three times a week.
