Mediterranean Diet Details

The study with the 3,500 adults took them into three different groups. One with the diet and extra-virgin olive oil, one with the diet supplemented with mixed nuts, and the last supplemented with mixed nuts or a low-fat diet. No other instructions were given to the groups and they were able to live their lives accordingly.

The Mediterranean diet which includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish, and other items local to the area is one that has existed for centuries. The nut group as well was divided into those who ate an ounce of walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, and other nuts. Three tablespoons was the max as well for some of those in the group.

The Mediterranean Health Study Findings

In the study, those who had more extra-virgin olive oil in their diets had a 40 percent less risk of getting diabetes. Other groups didn’t do so well as the percentages went down, and the extra-virgin olive oil group proved the healthiest. The study shows that just by adding extra-virgin olive oil to the diet can help diabetes risks.

The study, which was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, shows that diet and exercise help as well, but diet plays a major role in diabetes. While the study doesn’t say that people should load up heavy on olive oil in their diets, but adding olive oil to their diets may add to better health. It could be the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the oil, or could be a mixture of other factors, but it shows that olive oil maybe the best oil of all.
