The Candida diet is somewhat complicated. Many sites on the internet claim that you can’t eat this or that, e.g. cheese or mushrooms, but in fact they are even helpful. You should avoid carbohydrates instead and take GSE grapefruit-seed extract. More after the break.

One supplement that is definitely recommended is grapefruit-seed extract, but consult your doctor if you can take it. It’s a natural supplement that really helps.
What is Candida?
Many people must follow the Candida diet when suffering from Candida albicans. Candida albicans is yeast that resides in the digestive tract and vagina. Levels of Candida are kept under control by the immune system and probiotic bacteria in the body.
If these bacteria are killed by antibiotics or if the immune system becomes weakened, Candida yeast levels may get out of control. This causes local infections such as oral thrush, skin infections, and vaginal infections in women.
Factors that contribute to Candida albicans include the use of oral contraceptives, steroids, antacids, ant-ulcer medications, frequent or long-term use of antibiotics, high sugar diets, pregnancy, smoking, food allergies, and diabetes.
Herbs and Supplements
Aside from different healthy foods that aid in the healing of Candida, practitioners also recommend using small amounts of herbs and supplements. If you increase the intake of herbs and supplements too quickly, it will cause a temporary worsening of symptoms, otherwise known as a Herxheimer reaction (yeast die-off).
This results when Candida yeast are killed too quickly and they release protein fragments and toxins that trigger an anti-body response from the immune system.
The Candida Diet
The Candida diet is very strict. Sugar is avoided because it promotes the growth of yeast and the daily carbohydrate intake is greatly reduced to less than 60 grams a day depending on age, activity level, and extent of food sensitivities.
It usually takes 2-4 weeks, maybe even months, before the results of the Candida diet are noticed. Foods that were restricted during the diet may be slowly introduced back into your diet as your health improves.
Stage 1 of the Candida Diet
The first stage is detoxification. You must first detoxify your diet as well as your body. To detoxify your diet, you must know what to eat and what not to eat. Low-carb foods such as meat, chicken, turkey, shellfish, non-starchy vegetables, and certain nuts are emphasized. You must avoid any foods containing yeast such as fermented foods like bread with yeast,
cheese, tomato paste, mushrooms, and beer.
One rumor is that cheese and mushroom are bad for you. Cheese is very good for you to fight Candida, as well as mushrooms:
Scientific research shows that:
not a single edible mushroom will make Candida worse,
mushrooms are excellent food for those with Candida infection,
some mushrooms found in the forest or at the greengrocers’ are Candida-killers,
ordinary Portobello champignons help the immune system fight Candida albicans.
Also avoid sugar and soft drinks. You can also check out the Candida Control Cookbook for other food ideas.
The process of detoxification as part of the Candida diet can be a relaxing experience. To do this, you may sit in a sauna for 15-45 minutes. Skin brushing is another good remedy to try. Use a brush with natural bristles. Start brushing your feet with soft strokes and work up the body. Also try contrast showers. Use hot water for 3 minutes, and use cold water for less than one minute. Repeat this process one time.
The last step of stage one is to exercise. Complete cardiovascular exercises for 30 minutes, 4-5 days a week. All of these remedies cause better blood circulation and produce the removal of toxins from the body.
Stage 2 of the Candida Diet
Stage two is elimination. Kill the Candida in your diet. Rainbow Light Candida Cleanse is a food based tablet that can help kill Candida. Start using anti-fungal ingredients like aloe vera, black walnut, caprylic acid, cloves, garlic, goldenseal, grapefruit seed, olive leaf extract, oregon grapes, pantethine, and Pau d’Arco. You may also use anti fungal medications like Diflucar, Eraxis, and Nystatin.
Stage 3 of the Candida Diet
Stage three is repopulation. You have to repopulate the intestines with good bacteria to aid digestion and prevent the return of Candida. Probiotics are needed to maintain balance in the intestines and digestive system. Either take supplements like ThreeLac or FiveLac, or eat probiotic foods like fermented cabbage, sauerkraut, kimchi, or probiotic yogurt.
Candida albicans can be a painful condition with horrible symptoms like tiredness, poor memory, burning, tingling, stomach pain, joint pain and swelling, muscle aches and weakness, bothersome/persistent vaginal itching and burning, and many other painful symptoms. As hard as it may be, if you discipline yourself and follow the rules and stages of the Candida diet, you will have remarkable improvement and be pain free.
