Healthy High Calorie Foods

Did you know there are healthy high calorie foods? To most people, the terms “healthy” and “high calorie” absolutely do not sound like they belong in the same sentence. This is primarily due to the bad rap that calories have gotten over the years.

While it is true that calories can lead to weight gain, they are also the primary source of energy for the human body. Without caloric intake we would, to put it simply, perish. As long as the foods strike a good caloric balance between carbohydrates, fats, and protein then it is considered healthy regardless of caloric density.

There are some foods that, per a single serving size, contain comparatively high amounts of calories. When eaten in moderation, however, they are an integral part of a healthy diet.

Examples of Healthy High Calorie Foods

Perhaps one of the best examples of a food that is extremely high in calories yet still retains its “healthy” moniker is all-natural peanut butter. Without the addition of fillers such as high fructose corn syrup, all natural peanut butter packs a great dose of fiber, Omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. Add a scoop to your smoothies to enhance both their taste and nutritional value.

Avocados have an incredibly high fat content for a fruit, yet they are still widely considered quite healthy. Much of this is because of the distinction between “good” fats and “bad” fats. Avocados’ calories are about 75% from fat, but most of this fat is monounsaturated. They are also an excellent source of potassium (better than bananas) and fiber. Avocados are just one example of many healthy high calorie foods.

Certain types of fish are extremely high in calories, but they are also high in protein and Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA. DHA and EPA are the Omega-3 fatty acids with the “miraculous effects” that everyone talks about, and fish are one of the few foods with plentiful amounts of EPA and DHA in them.

Olive Oil, which contains an astounding amount of calories from fat per serving, is also a great source of the “good fats” that your body needs. Replace vegetable oil, canola oil, and palm tree oil with Olive Oil and your health will almost certainly take a turn for the better.

Healthy High Calorie Food – Distinctions

There are other foods which may indeed have high amounts of calories or even levels of saturated fat, but are still considered healthy because of their other benefits. Whole or 2% milk, while not optimal, is a great source of Vitamin D and Calcium. It has a considerable amount of calories for a beverage, and comparatively high levels of saturated fat, but it is nonetheless good for you.

The ultimate rule of thumb is moderation. Even eating too many “low calorie foods” can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. A proper and healthy diet should consist of both healthy high calorie foods and healthy low calorie foods.

A person can become obese and morbid both by eating too much broccoli or too much cake. High calorie foods are not the enemy, but rather an integral component of a balanced and healthy diet. The only person to make the daily distinction is you. There are many healthy high calorie foods you should eat in moderation.
