Cold and flu season is quickly approaching, and the more information you arm yourself with, the better equipped you will be to battle cold symptoms. While both the cold and flu are viruses (rather than bacterial infections) and as such are impossible to acutely cure, there are nonetheless multiple things you can do to shorten their duration and manage their symptoms.
Unfortunately, there is also a lot of misinformation out there that can waste precious time at the onset of the cold when it is most vulnerable to dietary supplements. Knowing what actually helps and what is simply marketing hype is crucial to getting over your cold symptoms faster.
Recognize when a cold is coming to fight the common cold.
The first thing you need to do in order to fight a cold is to be able to recognize when one is approaching as fast as possible. While this seems like it would be common sense, many people mistake the initial symptoms for allergies or something else entirely.
A cold can consists of runny nose, itchy eyes, sore throat, congestion, and fever. While allergies can be responsible for a handful of these symptoms, if you find that you have two or more, you should treat it as a cold virus.
Fight the cold by taking steps to prevent it.
The best way of fighting the common cold is prevention. Keep your immune system strong on a daily basis (especially during cold and flu season), avoid environments where you are likely to contract an illness (hospitals and close contact with sick individuals), and get plenty of rest.
To fight the cold, take a Zinc supplement as soon as you start having symptoms.
If, however, it is too late and you feel a cold coming on, there is still hope. The initial stages of a cold are the most important ones for symptom management. Take a Zinc supplement within twenty four hours of first experiencing symptoms. It has been shown that individuals who take such a supplement within the first day of their cold shorten the duration of their symptoms by a full twenty four hours.
Get plenty of rest to fight the cold.
Get plenty of rest. Your body only has so much energy, and staying active during your cold will reduce its capacity to fight the illness. Sleep at least eight hours a day, and attempt to remain calm and somewhat sedentary.
Other steps to fight the cold.
Eat chicken soup. Believe it or not, this is not just an old wives’ tale. Chicken soup has been shown to contain neutrophils which prevent the release of bacteria by the cold virus.
Take a multivitamin high in Vitamin C on a daily basis. Vitamin C is crucial for proper immune system performance and a multivitamin will also ensure that your body isn’t distinctly lacking anything it needs to function adequately and fight the virus.
Over the counter medications will help manage your symptoms, but it will likely do nothing to shorten the duration of the illness. In fact, some studies have shown that over the counter medications may actually lengthen the overall duration of symptoms (many cold medications, for example, are depressants which also slow down the immune system and metabolism). They are great to take if the symptoms are too much for you, but just remember to take them with care.
