The first (and perhaps easiest) thing you can do to boost your metabolism is also the most counterintuitive, and that is to eat breakfast. When you are sleeping, your body (and metabolism) is in energy conservation mode.
Kick it out of its slow state with a hearty breakfast that consists of protein, good fats, and complex carbohydrates. Eating breakfast will also keep you from overindulging later in the day which, on a slow metabolism, is a one-two punch towards obesity.
The next one likely sounds just as bizarre; eat more frequently. That is not to say that you should be consuming more calories but, rather, dividing your caloric intake into more meals. Instead of having three major meals a day, try eating five to six smaller ones.
This keeps your metabolism running at a consistent rate and prevents your body from triggering a reactive fat storage reflex. This is an extremely easy way to boost your metabolism and prevent hunger pangs.
Eat a more balanced diet. Spikes in sugar intake will cause your body to stop burning fat and begin storing more. Eat a good proportion of fats, protein, and complex carbohydrates. Just changing what you eat temporarily can throw your metabolism a curve ball that will cause it to speed up. Avoid simple carbohydrates, especially in acute doses, and try to maintain a steady blood glucose level.
Drink green tea. Besides the caffeine content, green tea has other amazing metabolism increasing properties. You can drink it warm or on ice, at practically every meal of the day. Green tea is also an excellent source of antioxidants, which provide yet another boost to your health.
Exercise. While training for marathons or Iron Man competitions every day will obviously boost your metabolism to sky high levels, exercise hardly has to be so extreme. Even a short, brisk walk every morning can help you burn as much as 300 extra calories a day. If you are an avid runner or jogger, do it in the mornings when your body is low on carbs. Exercise performed in the mornings has been shown to boost your metabolism for the rest of the day.
Build muscle. Muscle burns significantly more calories than fat. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn by doing absolutely nothing. This doesn’t have to be the bulky kind of muscle; build lean muscle mass all over your body and soon your metabolism will be through the roof!
